Panaji: The Goa government is planning to offer a subsidy of up to 50% on the purchase of electric vehicles (EVs) for bike taxi and autorickshaw operators as part of its efforts to promote clean mobility and reduce transport costs for commercial drivers.
The proposed scheme is aimed specifically at operators who use two-wheelers and autorickshaws for their livelihood, with the objective of making electric vehicles more affordable by reducing their upfront purchase cost.
If implemented, eligible bike taxi drivers and autorickshaw operators could receive government support covering up to half the cost of an electric vehicle, although the final subsidy amount will depend on eligibility criteria and any caps specified under the scheme.
The state government believes commercial vehicles are an ideal segment for EV adoption because they operate throughout the day and consume significant amounts of petrol or diesel. Replacing them with electric vehicles could lower operating costs while reducing air and noise pollution.
Electric vehicles generally have lower running costs than conventional fuel-powered vehicles, with charging expenses significantly lower than the cost of petrol or diesel. The government expects the shift to EVs to improve earnings for commercial drivers by reducing their daily fuel expenditure.
Goa, a major tourist destination, is also seeking to promote cleaner transportation as part of its broader sustainability goals.
The subsidy proposal is expected to benefit drivers operating on short urban routes, where electric vehicles are considered well suited because of their relatively predictable travel distances and charging requirements.
The government is yet to announce detailed guidelines, including eligibility conditions, subsidy limits and the timeline for implementation of the proposed scheme.
