Chandigarh: A compressed biogas (CBG) plant based on segregated organic municipal solid waste will be set up at the Daddu Majra dumping ground, where around 200 tonnes of wet waste will be processed daily.
After processing this quantity of waste, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) will produce about 8 tonnes of CBG per day, equivalent to 8,000 kilograms, Jagran reported.
The price of CBG is expected to remain at par with compressed natural gas (CNG). On Tuesday, CNG was priced at ₹91 per kilogram in Chandigarh. At this rate, IOCL is likely to generate around ₹7.28 lakh per day from the sale of CBG, with monthly revenue estimated at over ₹2 crore.
IOCL has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the project, which includes its operational model. The report will be discussed with officials of the central government, along with representatives of the municipal corporation. The Centre had earlier raised certain queries, and the project will be reviewed accordingly.
Officials said IOCL will recover its investment through the sale of CBG. A roadside retail outlet will be set up within the dumping ground premises to supply CBG to vehicles. Municipal corporation vehicles, especially those used for waste collection, are expected to run on CBG.
The plant will be set up by IOCL at its own cost, with an estimated investment of ₹125 crore. The municipal corporation will not incur any expenditure on the project.
The dumping site spans around 45 acres, of which about 14 acres will be developed as a green area. The proposed facility will be surrounded by greenery, with the green belt planned towards the residential side of Daddu Majra. The plant will be located along the Patiala road.
