McDermott, a prominent provider of engineering and construction solutions for the energy sector, has been awarded an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract by Abraxas Power Corporation for the Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) project in Central Newfoundland, Canada.
This groundbreaking project will establish Canada’s inaugural commercial green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. It encompasses the development of a wind farm with up to 530 turbines capable of generating 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, along with a 150 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) component.
The facility aims to produce 165,000 tons per annum (kta) of hydrogen and 5,000 metric tons per day of ammonia.
McDermott’s Senior Vice President of Low Carbon Solutions, Rob Shaul, emphasized, “This contract underscores McDermott’s leadership in delivering installation excellence and our comprehensive capabilities in the energy transition.”
“Drawing on our century-long expertise, from inception to completion, and our integrated delivery approach, we are well-positioned to offer Abraxas a scalable modular implementation solution that is expected to streamline costs, mitigate risks, and ensure high-quality outcomes,” Shaul added.
As per the contract terms, McDermott will provide front-end engineering design (FEED), engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution planning services, along with an open-book EPC cost estimate for the hydrogen production, ammonia processing, and product storage aspects of the project.
The project will be managed primarily from McDermott’s Houston office, with additional support from its office in Gurgaon, India.
