Viking Line secures biogas supply for 2026 to cut shipping emissions

Viking Line has secured a supply of biogas for its newest vessels for the first half of 2026, continuing the fuel mix that helped cut nearly 50,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2025, Bioenergy Insight reported.

The Åland-based company operates Viking Glory and Viking Grace daily between Turku and Stockholm, using a combination of biogas and liquefied natural gas. This blend reduces sulphur and particle emissions while lowering the overall climate impact of the ships’ operations.

“For the first half of 2026, we have secured 50 per cent biogas to cover our fuel needs, and our ambition is to maintain a high level throughout the entire year,” said Dani Lindberg, Viking Line’s head of sustainability.

In 2025, the company increased its use of biofuel tenfold. Passenger and freight traffic on the Turku-Stockholm route directly affects how much biogas is used in ship operations.

Viking Line is also working with the Ports of Stockholm and Turku to develop a green shipping corridor, aiming to make it fully fossil-free by 2035.

“Globally, many initiatives for fossil-free sea lanes are still at the planning stage,” said Marcus Risberg, CEO of Viking Line. “Our investment in biogas and energy-efficient vessels is one of the clearest examples of how shipping can transition in practice.”

The biogas is sourced from renewable European supplies and meets the Baltic Sea’s strict sulphur and particulate emission standards.
