EcoCeres launches Malaysia’s first sustainable aviation fuel plant in Johor

EcoCeres has officially launched a new renewable fuel facility in Pasir Gudang, Johor, marking the start of Malaysia’s first plant dedicated to producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), reports biofuels international.

The plant was successfully commissioned and began operations in October 2025. In addition to SAF, the facility also produces hydrotreated vegetable oil and renewable naphtha, with a combined maximum output of 420,000 tonnes a year.

Dr Peter Lee, founding investor of EcoCeres, said the launch reflects the company’s growth from a small laboratory in Hong Kong into a major global producer of sustainable aviation fuel. He said the Johor facility shows how regional efforts to promote sustainability can contribute to global climate solutions. He added that with supportive government policies and strong cooperation from partners, meaningful progress can be made in addressing climate change for future generations.

Officials from Hong Kong also welcomed the project. Eddie Cheung, JP, permanent secretary for Environment and Ecology of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said EcoCeres shares Hong Kong’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality and strengthening its role as a global connector. He said the Johor plant highlights how a Hong Kong-based company with international ambitions has chosen a strategic regional location for its production facility.

The new plant supports Malaysia’s push to expand renewable fuels and adopt waste-based fuel solutions as part of its plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Malaysia’s Minister of Plantation and Commodities, YB Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, said the government fully supports the EcoCeres project, noting that it aligns with the country’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and the National Agri-commodity Policy 2030. She said the facility will help create high-value jobs, cut carbon emissions and strengthen Malaysia’s position in the green economy, adding that the project reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth.
