Moeve delivers sustainable aviation fuel for Condor flights from Tenerife

Moeve has completed a major supply of sustainable aviation fuel to support Condor-operated flights departing from Tenerife South Airport in Spain’s Canary Islands, in a voluntary move aimed at cutting emissions from air travel. The airport is not yet covered by the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation rules, making the initiative an early step beyond regulatory requirements, reports Chemanalyst.

Under the agreement, Moeve supplied more than 515 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel to Condor. The fuel was produced from waste-based materials such as used cooking oil and agricultural residues. Over its full life cycle, the fuel is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1,700 tons compared with conventional jet fuel.

The fuel was used on several busy routes connecting Tenerife with German cities including Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf. Airport operator Aena estimates that more than 450,000 passengers travel each year on Condor flights to and from Tenerife South Airport, highlighting the potential impact of using cleaner fuel on these services.

Ángel Martínez Campos, who oversees sustainable aviation business development at Moeve, said the collaboration reflects the company’s long-term focus on reducing emissions from air travel. He noted that tourism plays a key role in the economy of Spain and Tenerife, making lower-emission flights an important priority. He added that working with Condor on a voluntary basis shows a shared commitment to sustainability that goes beyond minimum requirements.

From Condor’s side, the airline pointed to strong passenger involvement in supporting the use of cleaner fuel. Sina Rathgeber, Director of Airport Relations, Government Affairs and Sustainability at Condor, said customers have been able to voluntarily add small amounts to their ticket price or make direct contributions to support sustainable aviation fuel and certified climate projects. These funds, she said, are used only to buy additional sustainable fuel beyond what regulations require, helping make initiatives like the Moeve partnership possible.

The fuel supplied under the agreement was produced at Moeve’s La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, southern Spain. Moeve is currently building a new second-generation biofuels facility at the site, with a planned annual capacity of up to 500,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The project is more than halfway complete and is expected to begin operations by the end of 2026. Once operational, it will be the largest second-generation biofuels complex in southern Europe.

The supply agreement forms part of Moeve’s wider strategy to expand advanced biofuel production and availability. The company aims to play a leading role in Europe’s energy transition by 2030, while supporting the aviation sector’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
