Egypt’s 100-MW green hydrogen project begins partial operations and exports

A 100-MW green hydrogen project in Egypt has entered partial operation and has started exporting to Europe and the United States, marking a key step in the country’s push to become a regional centre for clean fuels, reports Renewables Now.

The project is located in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone and is being developed by a consortium that includes Norway-based renewable energy company Scatec, Egypt’s Sovereign Fund, Orascom Construction and UAE-based Fertiglobe.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the facility has begun limited production and is expected to gradually increase output in the coming period, which will allow exports to expand to European and other global markets, according to an official government statement.

He reiterated that the government is fully backing the project, noting that green hydrogen is a key pillar of Egypt’s wider renewable energy and clean energy plans. The remarks were made during a meeting held at the New Administrative Capital.

Scatec chief executive Terje Pilskog said the company attaches high importance to its cooperation with the Egyptian government and remains focused on supplying green hydrogen to European markets. Representatives from several European banks attending the meeting indicated their interest in financing the project and supporting Egypt’s goal of becoming a hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia.

The Egypt Green Hydrogen Project has secured a 20-year offtake agreement with Fertiglobe to supply its Ain Sokhna facility. The plant will export green ammonia to Germany after Fertiglobe secured the first contract under the H2Global hydrogen tender scheme.
