Singapore: A new plant on Pulau Bukom will start producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from 2028, with Singapore Airlines (SIA) and JetBlue likely to be among its first users, reports The Straits Times.
Named Project Beacon, the facility will be jointly developed by Aether Fuels, a climate technology start-up, and Aster, a company involved in chemical, energy, and infrastructure solutions. When completed, the plant is expected to produce up to 50 barrels of fuel a day, or about 2,000 tonnes a year.
The plant will be built at Aster’s refining hub on Pulau Bukom, which the company acquired from Shell in April. The two companies signed their partnership agreement on November 11, but did not reveal the size of their investment.
Before this project, Aether Fuels operated a pilot plant in the United States. The start-up, backed by Temasek-owned Xora Innovation since 2022, has developed technology that produces 20% more fuel while needing only half the equipment investment compared with sustainable fuel made from waste oils, said Aether Fuels founder and chief executive Conor Madigan.
He added that the technology is versatile and can run on different types of raw materials, offering flexibility in fuel production.
