Tuas Power aims to run 133 MW coal plant fully on biomass by 2028

Singapore: Singapore’s Tuas Power plans to operate its 133-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant entirely on biomass by 2028, the company announced on Thursday, reports Newswav.

The move is part of the firm’s broader effort to cut emissions and transition toward cleaner energy sources. Tuas Power, which has a total generating capacity of 2,670 MW and supplies about 20% of Singapore’s electricity, said it is also exploring renewable energy projects and clean energy imports to further reduce its carbon footprint.

Located at the Tembusu Multi-Utilities Complex, the combined cycle plant currently runs on a 70:30 mix of coal and biomass, the company said. It has gradually increased the use of imported wood pellets, palm kernel shells, and locally sourced wood chips in its operations.

Tuas Power said it is working closely with more customers to expand long-term offtake agreements, ensuring the transition to full biomass remains commercially sustainable.
