Mysuru APMC to set up biogas plant to turn market waste into clean energy

Mysuru: The Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) at Bandipalya in Mysuru is setting up a biogas plant to convert vegetable waste into compressed biogas. The project aims to manage waste more efficiently and generate clean energy within the market premises, reports The Times of India.

The market produces about 20 to 25 tonnes of organic waste every day, including spoiled vegetables, fruits, and other leftover materials. At present, APMC uses this waste to make organic manure through vermicomposting, which is then sold to farmers. Under the new plan, this waste will instead be used to produce biogas through a public-private partnership.

A detailed proposal worth ₹24.9 crore has been prepared and approved by the state government, clearing the way for the project. The plant will be built on one acre of land that has already been allocated.

The initiative is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduce landfill waste, and help fight climate change. It will also keep the market cleaner and save APMC money on fuel. The power generated from the biogas plant will be used to run vehicles and light up lamps in the market.

APMC superintendent N. B. Bharathkumar said the government has approved the proposal and that the process of inviting tenders and completing other formalities will begin shortly.

Trader Y. S. Yatish welcomed the move, saying the biogas project is a step toward creating a cleaner and more eco-friendly market while promoting the use of green energy.
