Masdar, Etihad Rail partner to boost UAE’s green hydrogen transport

In a move that supports the UAE’s clean energy goals, two major companies, Masdar and Etihad Rail, have agreed to work together on finding new ways to transport green hydrogen, reports Utilities-me.com.

The partnership will look into using the UAE’s growing national railway network to move the materials needed for producing green hydrogen, as well as the finished clean fuels themselves. These fuels include hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel.

The agreement was signed at a major rail industry event in Abu Dhabi by senior leaders from both companies.

The Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Rail stated, “Working with Masdar shows how railways are vital for sustainable transport in the UAE. Our network will provide the essential infrastructure to move large quantities of green hydrogen, which supports new innovation, energy security, and the country’s future economic growth. This partnership is a key part of our effort to build alliances that speed up the shift to cleaner energy.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Masdar added, “This partnership with Etihad Rail is a crucial step toward supplying green hydrogen on a large scale. This will help transform our energy systems and strengthen security. By working together, we can develop a complete green hydrogen industry, back the UAE’s environmental goals, and promote sustainable economic growth.”

Masdar has a goal to be a top global producer of green hydrogen by 2030 and is working on large projects around the world. Etihad Rail currently runs freight trains across the UAE, connecting major industrial centers and ports, and plans to start passenger services in 2026.

This collaboration advances Abu Dhabi’s and the wider UAE’s national strategies to become a leading producer and supplier of low-emission hydrogen by 2031, while also reducing carbon emissions from difficult sectors like transportation and heavy industry.
