Mitsubishi starts study on optimizing decarbonization value chain using green hydrogen and ammonia exported from India

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has announced the launch of a study to develop a master plan for the optimal facilities and logistics required to export green hydrogen and green ammonia from India. This initiative is part of METI’s FY2023 Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation supplementary program, in collaboration with Hygenco Green Energies, MHI’s partner in India.

India is actively promoting the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia as part of its efforts to build an export industry for these fuels. For countries like Japan and others in Southeast Asia, which are considering these fuels as part of their long-term decarbonization strategies, India is seen as a key potential supplier.

In the framework of this study, MHI will leverage its expertise to develop models for the production and use of green hydrogen and green ammonia, taking into account the real-world environmental conditions and the logistical challenges of transporting these fuels. MHI and Hygenco signed an agreement in August to gather data on green ammonia production in India.

Moving forward, MHI plans to integrate its production and usage models to identify the best facility designs under economically feasible conditions. This effort will contribute to the creation of a master plan for the use of carbon-neutral fuels, with a focus on countries such as India and Singapore. Based on the study’s findings, MHI, in collaboration with partners like Hygenco, will eventually present proposals to governments around the world on measures needed to promote the adoption of carbon-neutral fuels and foster international cooperation on these initiatives.

MHI Group is committed to advancing its business for the energy transition, aiming to achieve decarbonization across the energy supply chain and reach carbon neutrality by 2040. Through this project, MHI aims to support the development of decarbonization strategies and business opportunities for both Japanese and international operators in the growing carbon-neutral fuel value chain.
