HD Hyundai Oilbank Co. has launched South Korea’s first supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), marking its full-scale entry into the eco-friendly biofuel sector, reports Pulse.
The company announced on Wednesday that it will begin providing SAF for Korean Air Lines Co.’s Incheon–Kobe route this month. Under the agreement, Hyundai Oilbank will supply SAF to a total of 90 Korean Air aircraft through 2026.
The move follows earlier SAF exports to Japanese airlines in June 2023.
Hyundai Oilbank has been producing biodiesel at a commercial scale of 130,000 tons annually since last year as part of its strategy to expand its bio business into a major growth driver. The company has also adopted South Korea’s first supercritical process technology, enabling the use of non-edible, high-acid feedstocks under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions without a catalyst. In addition to aviation fuels, the company is advancing into the marine biofuel sector. It supplied ultra-low-sulfur biofuel to a domestic shipping company in July 2023, followed by exports to a Taiwanese shipping line in December the same year.
