Leaders from Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) and Acwa Power officially launched a partnership to pursue renewable energy projects in the Philippines and the broader ASEAN region during the ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, reports The Manila Times.
The signing of the agreement marked a key moment in the summit, with MGen President and CEO Emmanuel Rubio and Acwa Power Chief Investment Officer Thomas Brostrom leading the event. Also present were several senior executives from both companies, including MGen Chief Investment Officer Marc Daniel Dy, MGreen President and CEO Dennis Jordan, Acwa Power Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan, CEO Marco Arcelli, Vice President for Southeast Asia Salman Baray, and Senior Business Development Manager Sena Wahyudin.
Acwa Power, widely recognized as the world’s largest private water desalination company and a pioneer in green hydrogen development, brings a strong track record in clean energy to the partnership. With a global renewable energy capacity of 78.8 gigawatts—including projects with record-setting solar tariffs—the company is expected to provide technical and financial strength to upcoming ventures.
The collaboration will focus primarily on large-scale solar projects, with the goal of boosting the Philippines’ renewable energy share and contributing to regional energy sustainability. MGen, with 4,953 megawatts of diversified assets in the Philippines, adds local expertise and operational know-how to the partnership.
Both parties emphasized that the partnership reflects their shared commitment to clean energy and sustainable development, in line with global efforts to address climate change and reduce carbon emissions in the power sector.
