Uzbekistan to launch pilot biogas plant in partnership with Japanese firm Le One

Uzbekistan is preparing to launch a pilot biogas facility that will convert organic waste into methane, as part of its efforts to promote sustainable energy and improve waste management, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The project was announced following a meeting in Tashkent between Aziz Abduhakimov, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, and Haruki Yamasaki, CEO of Japanese clean-tech company Le One.

At the core of the initiative is the deployment of advanced biogas technology to turn biological waste into methane. The facility will use a hybrid circulation system that includes chemical washing and deep purification to refine the biogas into methane fuel.

The project is supported by a $4 million grant from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO), awarded to Le One for the 2025–2030 period. The funding is part of NEDO’s international demonstration programme aimed at promoting Japanese low-carbon technologies abroad.

According to Uzbekistan’s ministry, the new facility will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve organic waste disposal, and produce biohumus for agriculture. Officials said the project aligns with the country’s broader goals for sustainable development and a shift toward a low-carbon economy.

To move the initiative forward, both parties agreed to prepare and sign a formal cooperation agreement between Le One and Uzbekistan’s Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development, which will serve as the legal basis for the pilot project.
