Jakarta: A member of South Korea’s National Assembly has called for a halt to wood pellet imports from Indonesia and an investigation into the country’s biomass energy practices. The appeal comes after government data and satellite images linked South Korea’s biomass imports to deforestation in Indonesia, reports WNKY.
Biomass has become the second-largest source of renewable energy in South Korea. According to an October 2024 National Assembly audit report, more than 80% of the wood pellets used in the country are imported. Indonesia, with its vast tropical forests, has emerged as a significant supplier of these wood pellets.
