Lhyfe, a global leader in green and renewable hydrogen production, has announced the obtention of a grant totaling up to SEK 125.6m (approximately €11m) from Klimatklivet, an investment program supported by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The grant aims to facilitate the construction of a local renewable hydrogen production system in Trelleborg, the southernmost city in Sweden.
Trelleborg is a key transport hub with Scandinavia’s largest roll-on roll-off harbor, handling 10% of Sweden’s annual export and import traffic, according to the Trelleborg harbor authority. As transport and logistics companies transition to less polluting vehicles like hydrogen-powered electric vehicles, the demand for green hydrogen is expected to rise significantly. The hydrogen produced by Lhyfe’s new facility, capable of generating up to 4 tons per day based on a 10 MW electrolysis capacity, will supply hydrogen refueling stations and support the establishment of a sustainable mobility network. Initial production of green hydrogen is slated to commence in 2027.
The grant, covering development, design, equipment procurement, and construction phases, represents approximately 40% of the project’s total estimated investment. Lhyfe, renowned for its expertise in producing green hydrogen through water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, operates plants across Europe. The company’s dedication to advancing the hydrogen economy is underscored by ongoing and planned projects totaling around 10 GW capacity across the continent.
Sara Wihlborg, Country Manager Sweden at Lhyfe, expressed gratitude for the grant, emphasizing its significance as the company’s first subsidized project in Sweden. Wihlborg highlighted the grant as validation of Lhyfe’s commitment to green hydrogen production and its alignment with Sweden’s environmental objectives. She reiterated Lhyfe’s dedication to expanding green hydrogen infrastructure in Sweden, supporting both mobility and industrial sectors in their transition towards sustainability.
