India’s transition towards cleaner mobility gathered pace in May, with electric vehicle (EV) adoption reaching a record level even as overall automobile sales continued to grow despite higher fuel prices and challenging market conditions.
According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, electric vehicle penetration across all vehicle categories crossed 11% for the first time, making May the strongest month on record for EV adoption in the country, The Economic Times reported.
The growing shift towards alternative-fuel vehicles was one of the key highlights of the month. In the passenger vehicle segment, EVs accounted for 6.6% of total registrations, while compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles represented 23.3%. Combined, alternative-fuel vehicles captured more than 38% of passenger vehicle sales, reflecting increasing consumer preference for cleaner and more fuel-efficient mobility options.
The two-wheeler segment also witnessed a significant rise in electric mobility. Electric scooters and motorcycles accounted for 9.25% of total two-wheeler registrations in May, up from 6.11% during the same period last year. Dealers attributed the increase to rising fuel costs, growing consumer awareness and expanding availability of electric models.
Overall automobile retail sales rose 9.6% year-on-year to 2.53 million units, demonstrating the resilience of vehicle demand despite heatwave conditions, fuel price pressures and uncertainty linked to developments in West Asia.
Passenger vehicle sales surged 23.3% to more than 402,000 units, with rural markets emerging as a major growth driver. Dealers reported strong demand for new models, including a growing number of buyers considering electric and CNG-powered vehicles as alternatives to conventional petrol and diesel models.
FADA President C S Vigneshwar said the auto industry had maintained its growth momentum despite several economic and geopolitical challenges. He noted that consumer demand remained robust, particularly in rural areas where improving incomes and agricultural activity were supporting vehicle purchases.
Industry observers believe the record EV penetration highlights the accelerating acceptance of electric mobility in India. The trend is being supported by rising fuel prices, expanding charging infrastructure, increasing product choices and government efforts to promote cleaner transportation technologies.
Looking ahead, dealers remain optimistic that the progress of the southwest monsoon, stronger Kharif sowing activity and improving rural cash flows will further support vehicle demand. At the same time, the continued rise in electric and alternative-fuel vehicle sales is expected to play a central role in shaping the future of India’s automotive market.
The latest sales data suggests that while overall vehicle demand remains strong, the fastest-growing opportunity for the industry lies in the rapid expansion of electric mobility and other cleaner transportation technologies.
