IAG announces new e-SAF deal with Infinium

International Airlines Group (IAG) has announced a new agreement to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from e-SAF producer Infinium, which plans to begin supplying power-to-liquid e-SAF to the UK market in late 2026. This e-SAF, made from water, waste CO2, and renewable energy, is expected to cut lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by around 90% compared to conventional jet fuel.

The ten-year deal stipulates that Infinium will provide IAG’s five airlines — Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL, and Vueling — with e-SAF. Last year, IAG airlines were responsible for about 12% of the global SAF consumption.

This agreement is part of a broader effort to scale up e-SAF production. The fuel is created through a process that converts water, waste CO2, and renewable energy into a jet fuel substitute. This innovative fuel has significant environmental advantages, offering higher emissions reductions than traditional jet fuel, a smaller land and water footprint, and no feedstock limitations. It is also a “drop-in” fuel, meaning it can be used in existing aircraft without requiring any modifications to engines.

Jonathon Counsell, IAG’s Group Sustainability Officer, commented, “We’re on track to meet our 10% SAF target by 2030, and partnerships with innovators like Infinium are critical to reaching that goal. The aviation industry is committed to decarbonizing, and policies should prioritize solutions like SAF rather than focusing solely on cost increases that could undermine the competitiveness of European aviation. What we need are policy measures that support investment in SAF production plants to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”

The e-SAF supplied under this agreement will be produced at Infinium’s Project Roadrunner facility in West Texas, USA. Once fully operational, Project Roadrunner is expected to be the world’s largest e-SAF production site. The project has already received funding commitments from Brookfield Asset Management and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. This will be Infinium’s second eFuels project, following the development of Project Pathfinder in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, said, “We’re honored that IAG has chosen Infinium to help achieve its sustainability goals. Long-term, reliable agreements like this are crucial for scaling up e-SAF production, a key milestone for the airline industry and for eFuels as an alternative to fossil fuels and traditional SAF.”

In addition to its partnership with Infinium, IAG is investing in new aircraft, improving fuel efficiency, purchasing SAF, and advancing carbon removal projects as part of its comprehensive sustainability strategy to reduce emissions across its operations.
