Egypt launches large-scale biogas project in Beni Suef

Egypt is moving forward with a major biogas initiative in Beni Suef Governorate to convert agricultural and animal waste into renewable energy, the Cabinet announced on Sunday, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The project is being developed in partnership with the Biogas Energy Foundation for Sustainable Development — an affiliate of the Ministry of Environment — and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), with support from energy company Eni.

Following a meeting between Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Dr. Manal Awad and Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk, officials confirmed plans for a biogas plant with a daily capacity of 5,000 cubic metres. The facility will be supplied by a waste collection system capable of handling 134 tonnes of animal waste per day.

Authorities say the initiative will provide a safe disposal method for organic waste while generating clean energy and producing organic fertiliser.

Since its creation, the Biogas Energy Foundation has installed 2,000 biogas units across 19 governorates, producing 2.15 million cubic metres of gas annually and converting 53,800 tonnes of animal waste into 50,000 tonnes of fertiliser.
