Delhi schools prepare for phased shift to electric bus fleets under EV Policy 2026

Schools across Delhi have started planning for a gradual transition to electric buses following provisions under the Delhi EV Policy 2026, which requires educational institutions to convert 30 per cent of their bus fleets to electric vehicles by 2030.

Under the policy framework, schools must ensure that at least 10 per cent of their total bus fleet becomes electric within two years of the policy’s notification. The target will rise to 20 per cent by the end of the third year and reach 30 per cent by March 31, 2030, Entrepreneur India reported.

School administrations said preparations are being aligned with operational requirements and government guidelines.

Meenakshi Kushwaha, Principal of Birla Vidya Niketan, said the school currently operates buses through transport contractors and plans to work with them to introduce electric buses once the policy is formally notified. She added that the school would also procure electric buses wherever required under the new rules.

Mallika Preman, Principal of Tagore International School, East of Kailash, said the school’s existing fleet runs on CNG and that the institution is assessing the requirements of the policy. She said the move toward electric buses would depend on official notifications and practical implementation needs.

A representative of Sovereign School in Rohini said the school would adopt electric buses in line with the government’s schedule while ensuring student transport services remain unaffected during the transition.

Namita Singhal, Principal of Venkateshwar Global School, Rohini, said the phased targets provide schools with adequate time to prepare and implement the changes. She added that the school would follow government directions and induct electric buses according to operational needs and the policy timeline.

Under the policy, the Education Department will issue implementation guidelines for schools, incorporate EV-related requirements into recognition and affiliation processes, and oversee progress in coordination with the Transport Department.

The policy applies to all categories of school buses, including owned, leased and hired vehicles.

Apart from fleet conversion, the policy also encourages awareness programmes focused on air pollution, environmental protection, energy conservation and sustainable mobility, while promoting student-led activities aimed at building environmentally responsible practices.
