Anaergia awarded contract to design and build Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant in South Korea

Anaergia Inc.’s subsidiary, Anaergia Singapore Pte. Ltd., has been awarded a contract by New Jeju Bio Co. Ltd. to design and build the Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant on Jeju Island, South Korea. The initial value of the award is approximately C$25 million, pending several routine conditions, including the client securing final project financing.

As per press release, the Facility is expected to process around 50,000 tons of organic waste annually to generate two megawatts of energy. The feedstock will include various waste streams from slaughterhouses, citrus juice facilities, and food production sites on Jeju Island. These feedstocks will be digested anaerobically to produce biogas, which will be used in a biogas combined heat and power unit. The Facility will feature pretreatment technologies and Anaergia’s Omnivore™ anaerobic digestion system to produce about two megawatts of renewable energy and heat for digestion, pasteurization, and evaporation. Additionally, the Facility will generate digestate, which will be composted into fertilizer at an offsite location. Wastewater from the Facility is expected to be treated and recycled for use on-site and in agriculture. The Facility aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on Jeju Island while recycling waste. South Korea’s national biogas strategy aims to produce up to 500 million Nm³/yr of biogas by 2026, cutting GHG emissions by one million tonnes annually.

“New Jeju Bio chose Anaergia for this project due to the company’s proven expertise in providing integrated solutions for complex projects,” said Sae Hyun Cho, CEO of New Jeju Bio. “We look forward to leveraging Anaergia’s technology to convert the diverse range of organic wastes generated on Jeju Island into valuable resources,” added Mr. Cho.

“This Letter of Award from New Jeju Bio marks a significant milestone in Anaergia’s expansion into South Korea,” said Assaf Onn, CEO of Anaergia. “This project represents a strategic opportunity for Anaergia to address the growing demand for organic waste solutions in this emerging market,” added Mr. Onn.
