The European Commission has approved a €11.41 million ($12.98 million) grant to support a cross-border biomass district heating project serving Slubice in Poland and Frankfurt in Germany, Biomass Magazine reported.
The funding will support the 2024-6-TWIN-HEAT project, which aims to fully decarbonise district heating in Slubice and initiate deep decarbonisation of the heating system in Frankfurt through a coordinated cross-border approach based on renewable energy sources.
A key component of the project is the replacement of existing coal-fired heat generation units in Slubice with two modern biomass boilers. Each boiler will have a thermal capacity of 6 MW and will use sustainable wood chips as fuel.
Once operational, the biomass heating system is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 12,800 tonnes annually. The project is also expected to reduce emissions of particulate matter, including PM10 and PM2.5.
According to information released by the European Commission, the project is currently at the planning stage and permitting work has not yet started. Commissioning is currently scheduled for 2030.
The project is intended to demonstrate how cross-border coordination and renewable energy-based district heating can support the decarbonisation of urban heating systems in neighbouring European cities.
