Hyundai Motor India and Indian Oil Corporation have started a new project to see how well hydrogen-powered cars can work on Indian roads. The two companies signed an agreement to begin a two-year trial using Hyundai’s NEXO car, which runs on hydrogen, reports Autocar Professional.
As part of this trial, one NEXO vehicle has been given to IndianOil. It will be driven for about 40,000 kilometers to check how reliable and long-lasting it is. The companies will also look at how much it costs to run and maintain the car and compare that with its environmental benefits.
Hyundai’s Managing Director Unsoo Kim said, “This agreement with IndianOil brings together our hydrogen car technology and India’s expertise. We want to explore how green hydrogen can help change the way we travel.”
IndianOil’s Research Director Dr. Alok Sharma said, “Hydrogen is an important part of India’s clean energy plans. Working with Hyundai will help us understand fuel cell vehicles better and take steps towards cleaner transportation.”
This project supports the Indian government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The plan aims to make India a leading producer and user of green hydrogen, which is a clean fuel that doesn’t pollute the air. The government hopes this will help reduce the country’s use of petrol and diesel.
Hyundai has experience in making cars that run on many types of fuels, including petrol, natural gas, electricity, and hydrogen. The company is also working with IIT Madras to build a center to study and test hydrogen-related technology.
IndianOil, which is India’s biggest oil company, has been investing in cleaner energy options. The company is looking at hydrogen as one of the main alternatives to petrol and diesel in the future.
If this trial is successful, it could encourage more use of hydrogen-powered cars in India. It may help reduce pollution, create new jobs, and cut down the country’s oil import costs.
