Kuala Lumpur: TSI and Telfair Forest Products have announced the construction of a torrefaction facility at Telfair Forest Products’ site in Lumber City, Georgia, with commissioning and startup set for early this year, reports Bernama.com.
According to TSI, the partnership combines its advanced biomass torrefaction technology with Telfair’s operational expertise to support the growth of the carbonized biomass industry.
TSI CEO Benny Teal emphasized that the new facility will help address a major industry challenge—providing large commercial samples needed to advance production facilities.
The facility will have an annual capacity of over 15,000 tonnes and is designed to operate across various temperature and torrefaction levels to support different industry applications.
In addition to driving innovation in sustainable biomass, the project has received state government support for its economic benefits to the local community. Georgia Senator Blake Tillery noted that the initiative will bring 15 new and retained jobs to Lumber City and Telfair County through the development of a small torrefaction unit.
At the facility, a TSI-designed Torreactor will be used along with Telfair’s logistics network to torrefy and densify biomass, creating commercial demonstration samples for industrial users. These samples will help heavy industries explore torrefied biomass as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
Torrefaction is a thermal process that treats biomass, such as wood residuals and agricultural waste, in a low-oxygen environment, making it suitable for industries that have traditionally depended on coal and other fossil fuels.
The Torreactor will produce mildly torrefied biomass for heat, power, and biofuels industries, as well as highly carbonized products for use in steelmaking and other industrial applications, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.
