The Aqaba Water Company has unveiled a biogas power generation station at its wastewater treatment facility in northern Aqaba. The facility, launched on Monday, marks a significant move toward sustainable energy use and environmental innovation in Jordan.
The project, described as a pioneering initiative in Jordan, is aimed at boosting clean energy adoption, improving environmental and economic efficiency, and conserving natural resources. It reflects a broader effort to transition to renewable energy sources, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
Mufid Louzi, Director General of Aqaba Water Company, called the launch a milestone for the organization.
“This biogas power plant is a step forward in achieving energy independence for our wastewater treatment facility. It helps reduce the strain on traditional power grids and promotes a cleaner, healthier environment,” Louzi said.
He emphasized the project’s contribution to sustainable development, highlighting its role in enhancing local services, cutting carbon emissions, and reusing organic waste in an environmentally friendly way.
Wastewater treatment facilities have been developed to become the largest of this kind in Asia and have significantly expanded their capacity; from 12,000 to 40,000 cubic meters of wastewater treated every day. All these will use renewable energy, mostly solar and the biogas produced from its treatment processes.
This strategy shall contribute much to the company’s sustainability while strengthening the climate change action with efficiency in resource usage.
The biogas power station will position Aqaba Water Company as a forerunner in adopting green energy solutions, which would further Jordan’s efforts in environmental and economic sustainability.
