In the ongoing Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024-25, ethanol blending in petrol reached a record 18.2 percent in December. The cumulative ethanol blending from November to December 2024 also touched 16.4 percent. The blending percentage in December 2024 marks the highest ever recorded.
Official data shows that the ethanol blended under the Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP) in December 2024 amounted to 76.6 crore litres, with a total of 140.8 crore litres blended from November to December 2024.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), ethanol supply under the EBP programme has grown significantly, from 38 crore litres in ESY 2013-14 to 707.4 crore litres in ESY 2023-24, achieving an average blending of 14.6% in petrol.
For the current ESY 2024-25, the total allocation for ethanol supply (including both cycle 1 and cycle 2) is approximately 930 crore litres.
The government has set an ambitious target of 20% ethanol blending by ESY 2025-26, and it is confident of reaching this goal. To achieve this, around 1,016 crore litres of ethanol will be required, which totals 1,350 crore litres when accounting for other uses.
This push for increased ethanol blending is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce dependency on imported fuel.
