Green Hydrogen Summit kicks off at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025

The Green Hydrogen Summit, a highlight of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, kicked off today, gathering global industry leaders to discuss the acceleration of green hydrogen adoption across various sectors. The event focused on tackling challenges and exploring innovative solutions to promote the growth of this crucial industry in alignment with global sustainability goals.

Stephan Gobert, Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President for Green Hydrogen at ENGIE, a France-based energy company, referred to green hydrogen production as a pivotal shift in the energy sector, driven by the growing demand for large-scale energy sources. He pointed out that the Middle East holds a competitive advantage in providing extremely low-cost electricity, a fact demonstrated by recent auction results in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other countries in the region, creating significant growth opportunities for the sector.

Gobert also highlighted that ENGIE has completed its first green hydrogen plant in South Africa, which is currently operating at a smaller scale, while construction is ongoing for a second plant in Australia with a capacity of 10 megawatts. He emphasized that the primary objective is to build, operate, and maintain these projects to evaluate their efficiency and determine their long-term cost viability.

He stressed that the Middle East offers low renewable energy costs and has clear strategies to establish itself as a key player in the green hydrogen market. Gobert expressed confidence in the region’s potential but called for more government support to help realize these ambitions.

Additionally, he noted that while there are no current costs associated with pollution, this is expected to change in the future, which would benefit green hydrogen producers. Gobert concluded by stating that the next phase of development will involve launching larger projects with capacities in the hundreds of megawatts, eventually scaling up to gigawatt-sized projects, with a focus on key hubs that will drive the industry’s growth forward.
