Vedanta Aluminium and PwC India partner for biodiversity and carbon reduction in Odisha

Vedanta Aluminium has entered into a strategic partnership with PwC India to spearhead its biodiversity and carbon reduction efforts in Odisha, according to a company statement released on Wednesday.

The collaboration aims to implement innovative strategies for ecological preservation and community engagement. As part of the agreement, PwC India will oversee the deployment of advanced carbon sequestration methods, GIS-based mapping tools, and seasonal planning, among other initiatives.

The company’s efforts include the restoration of degraded lands to ensure no net loss of biodiversity. This will be guided by detailed habitat development plans created in partnership with local NGOs and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs).

In addition, Vedanta Aluminium plans to distribute 2,000 improved cookstoves to local communities, promoting cleaner cooking methods that enhance air quality and reduce reliance on traditional biomass fuels.

The company also intends to address ecological imbalances by removing invasive species and reintroducing native plants through the use of GIS-based mapping and seasonal restoration plans.

Furthermore, Vedanta Aluminium will apply these methods to establish dense, fast-growing forests, significantly enhancing carbon sequestration efforts.

Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Vedanta Aluminium, commented on the partnership, saying, “This collaboration with PwC reinforces Vedanta Aluminium’s commitment to sustainable growth and environmental responsibility. By tackling critical ecological issues and promoting community well-being, we aim to set new standards for responsible business practices in the industrial sector. Together, we are making significant strides toward conserving natural resources for future generations and creating a healthier, greener planet.”

To ensure effective planning and execution, Vedanta Aluminium and PwC will use globally recognized biodiversity tools, including the BRICS (Biodiversity Risk and Impact Assessment Tool) and GIS platforms for spatial mapping and restoration planning.

Sandeep Kumar Mohanty, Partner – ESG Strategy and Transformation and Leader – Sustainability and Climate Strategy at PwC India, added, “We are working with Vedanta Limited to explore advanced strategies for biodiversity conservation and carbon emission reduction. Our goal is to help create a more sustainable future for local communities and the environment.”

Vedanta Aluminium, a division of Vedanta Limited, is India’s largest producer of aluminium, manufacturing more than half of the country’s aluminium, with a production of 2.37 million tonnes in FY24, the company stated.
