CMMZE announces plans to construct large-scale green hydrogen production facility in UAE

Sustainable energy provider Compagnie Maritime Monegasque Zero Emission (CMMZE) has announced plans to build a large-scale green hydrogen production facility in the United Arab Emirates. Alongside similar projects in Morocco and Tunisia, this initiative aims to generate 180,000 tonnes of clean hydrogen annually, primarily for export to Europe. It marks a significant step in North Africa’s renewable energy transition, positioning the UAE, Morocco, and Tunisia as key contributors to the global green hydrogen market, reported Business Insider.

As per the media report, the UAE facility will utilize advanced technology powered by solar and wind energy. In Tunisia, CMMZE will establish dedicated renewable energy sites in Nefetia Benguerdane for solar power and El Hamma for wind energy to generate the necessary clean electricity for hydrogen production.

Founder Aldo Labia commented, “Through this project, we aim to enhance the energy sector with green hydrogen solutions, creating a sustainable energy source while aiding decarbonization efforts in North Africa and Europe.”

To produce the 180,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, approximately 1.2 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity will be required. CMMZE plans to install 250 MW of electrolyzer capacity at the port of Zarzis, along with processing and storage facilities.

This initiative aligns with the rising demand for clean energy alternatives in Europe and supports the European Union’s ambitious green hydrogen targets. By establishing a robust supply chain for green hydrogen from North Africa to Europe, CMMZE aims to enhance energy security and sustainability in both regions.

The three projects are expected to create local jobs and stimulate economic growth in the renewable energy sectors of Morocco, Tunisia, and the UAE. Additionally, they are projected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional hydrogen production methods.

CMMZE’s green hydrogen initiative builds on its recent achievement of launching North Africa’s first commercial hydrogen pilot stations, which have showcased the feasibility of hydrogen technologies in the region and set the stage for larger-scale projects.

Construction of the facilities in the UAE, Zarzis, and Nador is slated to begin in early 2025, with the first phase of hydrogen production anticipated to start by late 2027. The company is also negotiating long-term offtake agreements with potential European partners to ensure a stable market for its green hydrogen.

This ambitious project is a key milestone in CMMZE’s mission to accelerate the global shift toward clean energy and establish its leadership in large-scale green hydrogen production in North Africa.
