On Monday, Maharashtra inaugurated its first solar-powered village, with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde leading the ceremony for the complete solarisation of Manyachiwadi in Satara. The village, home to 420 residents, is now equipped with 102 rooftop solar connections, ensuring that every household benefits from zero electricity bills. Solar energy also powers the street lights and the public water supply system.
Additionally, the village’s school, gram panchayat office, and flour mill have all been outfitted with rooftop solar installations, according to Somit Sen. MSEDCL director Prasad Reshme noted that any surplus solar energy generated by consumers can be sold to MSEDCL for extra income. Following this milestone, Shinde has set a goal to solarise 100 such villages across the state.
