India’s green hydrogen offtake commitments cross 5.5 lakh tonnes annually by October 2026

India’s green hydrogen sector has secured offtake commitments exceeding 5.55 lakh tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of October 2026, positioning the country among the global leaders in green hydrogen supply agreements, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said in a press release issued through the Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Thursday.

Indian companies signed 18 new offtake agreements during 2026 for the supply of more than 4 lakh MTPA of green hydrogen equivalent, taking the total number of signed agreements to 23 since the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023.

According to the ministry, the total commitments have reached 5,55,610 MTPA, equivalent to around 11% of the mission’s target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. More than 70% of the contracted volumes are earmarked for exports.

The projects are expected to attract investments exceeding Rs 90,000 crore (approximately $9.5 billion), reflecting growing interest in India’s potential as a global supplier of green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia and green methanol.

Indian producers are also offering competitive prices for green ammonia and green methanol, helping them secure supply agreements in key markets such as Europe and Japan, the ministry said.

Several Indian companies have entered into long-term supply arrangements with international buyers for green hydrogen derivatives.

ACME Group has signed an agreement to supply 4.88 lakh tonnes of green ammonia annually to Japan’s IHI. It has also secured an agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical for supplying 1 lakh tonnes of green methanol annually.

Reliance Industries has entered into a long-term green ammonia supply and purchase agreement with South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation, valued at more than $3 billion, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028.

AM Green has secured an agreement with Germany’s Uniper to supply 2.5 lakh tonnes of green ammonia annually and another long-term arrangement with Japan’s JERA for 70,000 tonnes annually. The company has also won the Asian lot in the H2Global auction to supply renewable ammonia to Germany, with initial deliveries expected in 2029.

These agreements highlight the growing international demand for low-carbon fuels, particularly in fertiliser manufacturing, refining and shipping.

Alongside export opportunities, government-backed programmes are creating demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives within India.

Under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, agreements have been signed for the production and supply of 6.7 lakh tonnes of green ammonia annually to 11 fertiliser plants across the country.

Projects have also been awarded for supplying 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to refineries operated by Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and Numaligarh Refinery.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved in 2023 with an initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore until 2029-30, aims to establish India as a global production and export hub for green hydrogen.

By 2030, the mission targets annual green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 million tonnes, alongside 125 GW of renewable energy capacity addition, investments exceeding Rs 8 lakh crore and the creation of more than 6 lakh jobs.

The government also expects the initiative to help avoid 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The growing pipeline of domestic and international offtake agreements marks an important step towards building commercial demand for green hydrogen, although actual project execution, production capacity and timely deliveries will determine how quickly India can achieve its 2030 ambitions.
