India’s clean energy sector offers $220 billion investment potential by FY2030: MNRE

New Delhi: India’s clean energy sector offers investment opportunities worth an estimated USD 220 billion between FY2027 and FY2030, as the country works towards its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said, ANI reported.

Non-fossil fuel sources account for more than 54 per cent of India’s total installed power capacity. Private investment has emerged as a major contributor to the expansion of the country’s renewable energy sector.

J.V.N. Subramanyam, Joint Secretary at MNRE, said the private sector was playing the leading role in transforming India’s power sector, while the government was providing the policy framework needed to support growth.

The estimated USD 220 billion investment opportunity covers several segments of the clean energy value chain, including solar and wind power, energy storage, manufacturing, transmission, green hydrogen and hydropower.

Subramanyam said the investment requirement reflected the scale of the opportunity available to investors rather than a constraint on the sector’s growth.

According to MNRE, private entities account for nearly 74 per cent of India’s renewable energy capacity. Policy stability, permission for 100 per cent foreign direct investment under the automatic route and payment security mechanisms have helped encourage private participation.

The government has also introduced measures to improve project viability and provide greater certainty over revenues. These include a 500 MW Contract for Difference pilot implemented through the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on renewable energy equipment from 12 per cent to 5 per cent is another measure expected to support the sector.

To encourage further investment and collaboration, the government will organise the Bharat Renewable Energy (BRE) Summit and Expo 2026 from November 2 to 5 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event will bring together the ninth session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly and the fourth International Conference on Green Hydrogen.

More than 400 exhibitors and delegates from over 75 countries are expected to participate. The summit aims to facilitate investment, develop state-level project pipelines, promote business-to-business partnerships and encourage technology collaboration.

MNRE said the 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target would mark an important step towards India’s longer-term ambition of achieving 1,800 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by Viksit Bharat 2047 and net-zero emissions by 2070.

Subramanyam said the 500 GW target could not be financed by the public sector alone. He emphasised the need to establish an investment environment that would enable private capital to enter the sector at scale, with confidence and a long-term outlook, ANI stated.

The ministry said mobilising investment across the clean energy value chain would be essential to expanding capacity and advancing India’s transition towards a cleaner energy system.
