OMV receives first electrolyser components for 140-MW green hydrogen project in Austria

Austria-based energy group OMV AG has received the first electrolyser components for its 140-MW green hydrogen production facility at Bruck an der Leitha, keeping the project on track for completion by the end of 2027, Renewables Now reported.

The delivery marks the beginning of the installation of the plant’s core technology, OMV said on Wednesday. The company is proceeding with the project independently after UAE-based investor Masdar withdrew in September from a proposed joint venture to finance, build and operate the facility.

The project is designed to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using renewable electricity generated from wind, solar and hydropower. Once operational, the facility is expected to rank among Europe’s five largest green hydrogen production plants by capacity.

Austrian construction company Strabag SE is responsible for construction, while Siemens Energy is handling technical plant engineering and supplying the electrolysers and other equipment.

The project is being supported by a €123 million debt facility from Austria’s federal development bank, Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws), and €450 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Following Masdar’s withdrawal, OMV confirmed that the project’s scope and completion schedule would remain unchanged.

The development represents a significant step in Austria’s efforts to expand renewable hydrogen production. Green hydrogen produced using renewable electricity is expected to support industrial decarbonisation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels in sectors where direct electrification can be challenging.
