Gandhidham: Deendayal Port Authority chairperson Sushil Kumar Singh has called for greater use of greener fuels and energy-efficient technologies in the maritime sector to reduce carbon emissions and support India’s clean energy transition, ANI reported.
Speaking at the Kandla Green Hydrogen Conclave 2026 on Friday, Singh said improving energy efficiency alone would not be enough to achieve zero-emission operations and that the sector needed to shift towards cleaner and sustainable fuels.
“The adoption of greener fuels, cleaner fuels, sustainable zero-emission fuels, along with energy-efficient technologies” was essential to reduce the carbon footprint of maritime operations, Singh said.
He said the maritime sector needed to reduce its greenhouse gas intensity in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit the rise in global temperatures to well below 2 degrees Celsius while pursuing efforts to restrict it to 1.5 degrees.
Singh said Kandla had been designated as a Green Hydrogen Hub by the Centre and was taking an aggressive approach to testing emerging technologies through pilot projects.
The port is being developed as a test bed where companies can demonstrate technologies, improve their technology readiness levels and eventually scale successful solutions for commercial deployment, he said.
“We are offering it to anybody who wants to come up with this technology, test it here and prove it here,” Singh said, adding that successful technologies could then be taken to commercial scale.
The Kandla Green Hydrogen Conclave brought together industry representatives, experts and delegates to discuss green hydrogen, clean energy transition, sustainable port development and emerging technologies.
The event included discussions on accelerating India’s green maritime ambitions and promoting collaboration in clean energy and sustainable port development, ANI stated.
