The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to add 70 electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet in phases to reduce diesel consumption and operating costs while promoting cleaner urban transport.
Officials said the vehicles will be procured in four phases, with the first batch of 15 EVs expected to be purchased initially. The procurement process is likely to begin between September and October, subject to approval of the proposal, The Times of India reported.
The municipal corporation currently operates around 1,200 vehicles of various sizes for garbage collection and other civic services across the city’s 100 wards. The fleet consumes nearly 4,000 litres of diesel every day, resulting in annual fuel expenditure of more than ₹4 crore.
According to officials, the proposed electric vehicles will be charged using electricity generated from biogas, reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels and lowering the corporation’s fuel costs.
PMC Chief Engineer (Electrical and Mechanical) Sanjay Katiyar said the civic body was preparing a roadmap to introduce electric vehicles into its operations as part of its clean energy initiative.
The corporation is expected to spend between ₹10 crore and ₹20 crore on procuring the EVs.
Separately, the PMC has also received 60 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles for garbage collection. The vehicles were procured during the Maha Kumbh and later transferred to the municipal corporation by the Mela administration.
