The UK Government’s initiative to ensure 10% of jet fuel used in flights departing the UK comes from Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030 has the potential to boost the nation’s green economy significantly. This SAF mandate, announced last month and awaiting parliamentary approval, is scheduled to become law in January 2025, marking a pioneering step in sustainable aviation.
However, a critical challenge lies in the insufficient SAF feedstock and the rapidly increasing demand that surpasses current and projected supplies. Presently, the global supply of SAF is limited to no more than 2 million metric tons (mt), while demand is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 45%. Over 40 airlines have already committed publicly to using approximately 13 million mt of SAF by 2030. Meeting the government’s SAF mandate will require cost-effective solutions to be introduced to the market.
