New Delhi: Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has crossed 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational renewable energy capacity, achieving the milestone primarily through greenfield development, according to a company statement, ANI reported.
The company said its renewable portfolio now generates more than 52 billion units of clean electricity annually. According to AGEL, this output accounts for nearly 3 per cent of India’s electricity consumption and is sufficient to power New York City for a year or meet the combined annual electricity needs of almost all of Mumbai and New Delhi.
During FY26, the company added 5,051 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity, which it described as the country’s largest and fastest expansion in the sector so far.
AGEL’s operational portfolio currently consists of around 14.2 GW of solar power capacity, 2.7 GW of wind energy and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid projects. The company has also commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The announcement follows the Adani Green Energy Dialogue held on June 26 during London Climate Action Week at The Science Museum in London. During the event, the company emphasised the need to accelerate electrification through renewable energy supported by large-scale energy storage to improve energy security, affordability and reliable round-the-clock clean power supply, according to ANI.
According to the company, the milestone has been achieved within a decade of commissioning its first renewable energy project at Kamuthi in Tamil Nadu in 2016, making it India’s largest and fastest greenfield renewable energy capacity expansion.
Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, said crossing the 20 GW mark reflects sustained execution and long-term planning. He said the company’s renewable generation now produces electricity comparable to the annual power demand of Mumbai and New Delhi combined while supporting India’s energy transition goals.
The company said its next phase of expansion is centred around Khavda in Kutch, Gujarat, where it is developing what it describes as the world’s largest renewable energy project.
Spread across 538 sq km of land, the Khavda project has a planned capacity of 30 GW. AGEL said it has already commissioned 9.5 GW of solar capacity at the site, representing more than 30 per cent of the project’s planned capacity.
