New Delhi: Delhi has recorded a strong rise in rooftop solar adoption in recent years, supported by government subsidies, awareness drives and digital support systems, with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) crossing 10,000 rooftop solar installations across North and North-West Delhi, ANI reported.
According to the company, 10,466 rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 160.3 MWp had been energised by April 2026 under its flagship Project Suryansh. The company said the growth supports the Government of India’s clean energy initiative under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
Residential consumers accounted for the largest share of installations, with 8,451 households adopting rooftop solar systems. Tata Power-DDL said consumers are benefiting from lower electricity bills while also being able to send surplus electricity back to the grid.
The pace of installations increased sharply during FY 2025-26, when 5,378 new rooftop solar systems with a total capacity of 55.75 MWp were added, marking the highest annual rooftop solar addition recorded in Delhi so far. Installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme also increased significantly to 3,100 during the year.
The company attributed the growth to financial support and awareness campaigns. According to Tata Power-DDL, combined Central and State subsidies of up to Rs 1.08 lakh have helped reduce upfront installation costs, enabling consumers to recover their investment within two to three years.
Commercial and industrial consumers accounted for 2,015 installations, while more than 50 Cooperative Group Housing Societies also adopted rooftop solar systems, ANI stated.
The company said it carried out extensive awareness activities through “Solar Sakhis” in villages, “Solar Ambassadors” in urban areas, street plays, solar camps and promotional campaigns through metro advertisements, FM radio and social media.
Tata Power-DDL also introduced digital support initiatives including a solar calculator, dedicated call centre, WhatsApp helpline and online onboarding system to simplify rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
The utility further said it has installed rooftop solar systems at 18 of its own facilities, generating 2.1 MWp of captive clean energy.
