MahaRail achieves major milestone at Byculla Cable-Stayed Bridge; all 40 Stay Cables completed

Mumbai: MahaRail has achieved a major engineering milestone in the construction of the Byculla Cable-Stayed Road Over Bridge (ROB) with the successful erection and installation of all 40 stay cables, according to a press release.

With the completion of the final stay cable on May 21, 2026, the entire 173-metre main span of the bridge is now structurally supported through the stay cable system. The cable-stayed span has an approximate self-weight of 5,000 metric tonnes.

The project is being constructed adjacent to the existing century-old Byculla ROB, which has outlived its service life. By building the new structure first, MahaRail is ensuring that the heavy traffic flow on the Eastern Express Highway remains uninterrupted. Once the new bridge is operational, the old structure will undergo a comprehensive strengthening process.

The state-of-the-art Byculla Cable-Stayed Road Over Bridge (ROB) is in its final stretch of construction. This iconic structure will provide a vital, weather-resilient link between East and West Byculla, ensuring a seamless commute for Mumbaikars.

Project Highlights

•     Total Length: 916 meters (including approaches)

•     Bridge Height: 9.70 meters

•     Pylon Height: 50 meters

•     Capacity: 4 lanes (upgraded from the existing 2 lanes)

•     Number of Spans:12 Non-Railway Composite span (Range 14m to 60m)

•     Cable Stayed Span: 173m (86.5m + 86.5m)

•     Stay Cables: 40 Nos (Range- 15m to 65m)

•     High-Strength Structural Carbon Steel: 5000 MT

•     Project Cost: ₹287 Crore

•     Special Features: Selfie Point, Three-Tier Utility Duct System, Decorative & Remote-Controlled LED Facade Lighting.

Spanning 916 meters with a soaring pylon height of 50 meters, the four-lane bridge is a marvel of modern engineering. A key highlight of this project is MahaRail’s patented 3-tier Utility Duct system integrated into the crash barriers.

The Byculla bridge is set to become a destination, featuring:

•     Signature LED Lighting: Remote-controlled architectural lighting will enhance night-time visibility. On national holidays like Independence Day and Republic Day, the bridge will be bathed in vibrant Tri-colour illumination.

•     Interactive Spaces: A designated selfie point has been integrated into the design, allowing citizens to capture the bridge’s grand geometry against the Mumbai skyline.

•     Overcoming Bottlenecks: Using specialized Deck Erection Crane (DEC) technology, MahaRail is currently executing the complex erection work over the bustling Byculla vegetable market and active Railway Lines—the most challenging phase of the project.

To ensure a smooth transition, MahaRail has planned a sophisticated integration where one span of the existing ‘Y’ bridge will be dismantled and connected to the new cable-stayed structure. This strategic move ensures that traffic to and from CSMT remains fluid while preserving the historical significance of the original corridor.
