ACI EUROPE backs EU plan to secure jet fuel supply amid global uncertainty

Brussels: ACI EUROPE has welcomed the European Commission’s “AccelerateEU” plan, aimed at ensuring stable jet fuel supply across the continent in the face of ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The initiative outlines steps to maintain fuel availability for airports and airlines, helping keep flight operations running smoothly across Europe. The plan focuses on strengthening coordination among member states, fuel suppliers, airlines and airports to manage supply risks and improve distribution, International Airport Review reported.

A key feature of the strategy is the creation of an EU Fuel Observatory to track fuel stocks and monitor supply levels. It also allows flexibility in certain regulations, including rules related to fuel loading practices and the use of imported fuels, while exploring possible updates to strategic fuel reserve policies to include jet fuel.

According to ACI EUROPE, the measures align with recommendations it had earlier shared with EU policymakers.

Director General Olivier Jankovec said that there are currently no jet fuel shortages affecting airports in Europe and that flight operations continue as normal. However, he noted that the plan provides an important framework to handle any potential disruptions, especially given uncertainties in global supply routes.

The move comes amid concerns over possible supply disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy shipments.

Jankovec also stressed the importance of maintaining strong air connectivity, highlighting aviation’s role in supporting tourism, trade and economic activity. He urged member states to consider additional steps, such as temporarily easing aviation taxes, to reduce financial pressure on the sector.

The plan also underlines the need for long-term investment in sustainable aviation fuels and measures to strengthen energy security across Europe’s aviation industry.
