Greater Noida: The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority is planning to establish a 300-tonne-per-day compressed biogas plant at the Astauli dumpsite, aiming to tackle growing waste and reduce legacy garbage in the city.
Officials said the project, estimated at ₹80 crore, will process municipal solid waste and convert it into compressed biogas, a cleaner fuel option. The authority is set to issue a revised request for proposal soon after addressing technical issues in an earlier notice, The Times of India reported.
The proposed plant is expected to ease pressure on the Astauli landfill by treating both fresh and old waste using biomining and scientific disposal methods. Spread across 134 acres, the site is the main dumping ground for Greater Noida and nearby areas, which have been facing rising waste due to rapid urban growth.
Authorities said the city’s population has increased sharply over the years, putting added strain on waste management systems. The landfill project had earlier faced delays due to land disputes with farmers but moved forward after the issues were resolved in 2020.
This will be the second biogas-related facility at the site, with another 300 TPD waste-to-bio-CNG plant already under development and expected to start operations by January next year.
In addition, NTPC Ltd is setting up a 900 TPD plant at Astauli to convert waste into torrefied charcoal, a fuel similar to coal, as part of efforts to strengthen the area’s waste management system.
