The United States saw a sharp decline in biodiesel trade in 2025, with both exports and imports falling significantly from the previous year, according to data released Feb. 19 by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Biodiesel Magazine reported.
U.S. biodiesel and biodiesel blends of B30 and greater exports totaled 274,599.2 metric tons in 2025, down 55% from 606,484.3 metric tons in 2024. The value of those exports dropped to $316.36 million, compared to $812.27 million a year earlier.
In December, exports reached 9,775.1 metric tons, lower than both 10,167.2 metric tons in November and 19,303.6 metric tons in December 2024. The value of December exports was $7.84 million, down from $10.17 million the previous month and $19.85 million in December 2024.
The U.S. exported biodiesel to about six countries in December. Peru was the largest destination at 8,417.2 metric tons, followed by Canada at 821.8 metric tons and Germany at 284.9 metric tons. Over the full year, Canada, Peru, Germany, Mexico and Indonesia were the leading markets for U.S. biodiesel.
Imports also declined sharply. The U.S. imported 112,907.3 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends in 2025, down 92% from 1.4 million metric tons in 2024. The value of imports fell to $104.34 million, compared to $1.89 billion the previous year.
In December, biodiesel imports totaled 13,554 metric tons, down from 18,549 metric tons in November and 97,420.7 metric tons in December 2024. The value of December imports stood at $13.55 million, compared to $18.7 million the previous month and $119.21 million in December 2024.
The U.S. imported biodiesel from five countries in December. Canada was the largest supplier at 13,518.9 metric tons, followed by Singapore at 16.2 metric tons and Belgium-Luxembourg at 15.3 metric tons. For the full year, the top sources of U.S. biodiesel imports were Canada, China, Belgium-Luxembourg, France and Singapore.
The latest figures highlight a steep contraction in U.S. biodiesel trade flows in 2025 compared to the previous year.
