Amazon signs 110 MW offshore wind power deal with RWE in Germany

Amazon has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with renewable energy company RWE for electricity from a German offshore wind project, strengthening its push toward carbon-free energy, RWE said.

Under the agreement, Amazon will procure 110 megawatts (MW) of power from RWE’s Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. The capacity is expected to generate enough electricity annually to supply more than 139,000 households in Germany. The deal builds on a Strategic Framework Agreement signed in June 2025, under which RWE supports Amazon’s clean energy targets while Amazon Web Services provides cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics to aid RWE’s digital operations.

Located about 50 kilometres north of the island of Juist, the Nordseecluster project is being developed in two stages. Nordseecluster A, with a capacity of 660 MW, is currently under construction and is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027. The second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add another 900 MW and is expected to start commercial operations in 2029. The wind farm is jointly owned by RWE, which holds a 51 percent stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management with 49 percent.

Ulf Kerstin, Chief Commercial Officer at RWE Supply & Trading, said agreements such as the one with Amazon play an important role in supporting Germany’s shift to cleaner electricity while ensuring long-term supply stability. He added that large offshore projects help bring dependable carbon-free power to the grid and support a stronger energy system.

The deal also aligns with Amazon’s commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. In Germany, the company already operates six onsite solar projects, and the latest agreement marks its fourth large offshore wind PPA in the country. Together, Amazon’s 10 renewable projects in Germany have a combined capacity exceeding 790 MW and are expected to produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million homes once fully operational.

Rocco Bräuniger, Amazon’s Country Manager for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, said the partnership supports Germany’s transition toward a modern, carbon-free energy future and expands the country’s renewable capacity.

Globally, Amazon has contracted more than 1GW of renewable energy across several RWE projects. The latest agreement also represents the first collaboration between the two companies outside the United States.
