NEW DELHI: The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme has supported the sale of more than 26.5 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) as of July 22, 2026, while the government continues to promote domestic manufacturing and expand the country’s EV charging infrastructure, the Ministry of Heavy Industries informed the Lok Sabha, ANI reported.
The ministry said the scheme, which is being implemented from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2028, has a total outlay of ₹10,900 crore. Of this, ₹2,322 crore had been released and utilised by July 22, 2026.
Under the scheme, incentives have supported the sale of 23.79 lakh electric two-wheelers, 2.68 lakh L5-category electric three-wheelers, 6,547 electric rickshaws and e-carts, and 55 electric trucks. The scheme has also sanctioned 14,000 electric buses.
Maharashtra accounted for the highest number of EVs supported under the programme with 4.28 lakh vehicles, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 2.78 lakh and Karnataka with 2.67 lakh. Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh recorded support for 2.59 lakh and 1.73 lakh EVs, respectively.
To strengthen charging infrastructure, the government has approved proposals for 5,871 public EV charging stations across nine states under PM E-DRIVE. Karnataka received approval for 1,571 chargers, followed by Delhi with 1,146 and Rajasthan with 805. In addition, 691 charging stations proposed by three public sector oil marketing companies have also been approved.
However, the government said no charging stations had been installed under PM E-DRIVE as of July 22, indicating that the infrastructure component remains at the implementation stage.
The ministry said the earlier FAME-II scheme supported the deployment of 16.71 lakh electric vehicles, 5,297 electric buses and 9,583 public charging stations across the country.
To promote domestic manufacturing, the government said the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) under both FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE encourages local production of electric vehicles and key components, including battery packs.
The government also informed Parliament that Karnataka had the second-highest number of public EV charging stations in the country, with 6,805 stations as of March 31, 2026. Under PM E-DRIVE, the state has received approval for ₹153.10 crore to install 1,571 additional charging stations.
The ministry said the scheme does not prescribe state-wise or district-wise EV adoption targets, but instead sets targets for different vehicle segments. It added that ₹2,000 crore has been earmarked for expanding the national public charging network and ₹780 crore has been allocated to modernise four testing agencies—ARAI, ICAT, NATRAX and GARC—to strengthen India’s EV testing and certification capabilities.
