Indonesia to ban export of palm oil waste to boost domestic energy use

Bogor, West Java: President Prabowo Subianto has announced that Indonesia will prohibit the export of palm oil waste, including used cooking oil, to prioritize its use for domestic needs, particularly in advancing energy self-sufficiency, Antara, Indonesian News Agency reported.

Prabowo stressed that the country’s abundant palm oil resources must first serve national interests, while speaking at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of Central and Regional Governments in Sentul, Bogor, West Java, on Monday.

“Palm oil waste, including used cooking oil, is material for aviation fuel. So, I am closing it off to other nations. It must first serve the people of Indonesia,” he said.

Prabowo described palm oil as a strategic commodity with a wide range of applications—from cooking oil and food products to soap and biodiesel. He called it a “miracle crop” for its ability to meet global demand.

He acknowledged international interest in Indonesia’s crude palm oil (CPO) but emphasized that national priorities must come first. The government aims to use raw materials, including used palm oil, to develop domestic biodiesel and aviation fuel.

According to Prabowo, this approach will reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel. His vision includes achieving biodiesel self-sufficiency and positioning Indonesia as a leading producer of palm oil-based aviation fuel.

“Most importantly, palm oil allows us to produce diesel. Biodiesel will free us from foreign dependence. Those who want gasoline, fine, pay world prices. But our people can live with diesel,” he added.
