MOBER, Tesda partner to train workforce for Philippines’ electric vehicle sector

MOBER has entered into a partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) to set up training programmes for workers in the Philippines’ growing electric vehicle (EV) sector, as demand rises for skills linked to cleaner transport and logistics, officials said, The Manila Times reported.

Under the agreement, the two sides will jointly design and run training courses covering electric vehicle driving, maintenance and other technical skills. The aim is to prepare workers for jobs in transport and logistics services that use electric vehicles.

Tesda will ensure that the training courses match national skills standards, while Mober will provide trainers, training facilities and access to its electric vehicle fleet. The company will also share practical inputs based on its experience in logistics operations.

Officials said the partnership is meant to develop local skills standards for electric vehicles and close gaps in training as the country moves towards lower-emission transport systems.

The programme will also focus on increasing the number of women in technical roles within the logistics sector. Mober said this effort is linked to its MoveHer campaign, which promotes women’s participation in roles such as vehicle operation and maintenance, areas that have traditionally been male-dominated.

According to Tesda data, women who completed technical and vocational training programmes had an employment rate of 85.6%, which is higher than the national average.

Mober vice president for people and sustainability Miguel Bermundo said the company is committed to building a pool of skilled women for the green economy and sees workforce development as a key responsibility as the business expands.

Tesda Deputy Director General Nelly Nita Dillera said the partnership will help train more women in electric vehicle driving, repair and maintenance, skills that are expected to be in higher demand as electric mobility grows.

The electric commercial vehicle market in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to reach $221 billion by 2029, growing at an annual rate of nearly 18%, highlighting the need for a skilled workforce to support the sector.

Tesda Secretary and Director General Jose Francisco Benitez said partnerships with industry are important for adapting global skills standards to local needs. He said working with private companies helps speed up the development of training programmes that are relevant for Filipino workers.

The partnership was signed at a ceremony held at the Tesda Central Office in Taguig, with representatives from the Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines also present.

Mober said it plans to expand its training efforts alongside the growth of its all-electric vehicle fleet, as part of wider efforts to support workforce development in sustainable transport and logistics.
