Uttar Pradesh to set up two centre of excellence as per green hydrogen action plan

The Uttar Pradesh government has started work on an action plan for green hydrogen as part of its efforts to promote clean energy and reduce carbon emissions. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state is moving to strengthen research, innovation and the startup ecosystem through its Green Hydrogen Policy, reports The Indian Express.

As part of the plan, two centres of excellence will be set up in the state to support the development of green hydrogen technologies. Startups working in the green hydrogen sector will also receive financial support for a period of five years. The state government aims to bring down the cost of green hydrogen and position Uttar Pradesh as a major hub for green energy technology in India.

The proposed centres of excellence will focus on technologies related to the production, storage, transportation and use of green hydrogen, with an emphasis on cost reduction. Both centres will be established through leading academic institutions in the country, and their research activities will be aligned with industry needs. The state government will provide up to ₹50 crore in full financial support to each centre for setting up advanced laboratories and testing facilities.

India has set a national target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, and Uttar Pradesh is working to play an active role in meeting this goal. The state government is positioning Uttar Pradesh as a manufacturing and technology base for green hydrogen. The Chief Minister has already inaugurated the state’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur district, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 500 tonnes. Several other green hydrogen projects are also in the pipeline across the state.

The Green Hydrogen Policy also includes incentives aimed at encouraging startups. Eligible startups linked to incubators of recognised academic institutions will receive financial assistance of up to ₹25 lakh per year for five years. The initiative is expected to promote research-based entrepreneurship among youth, support the development of new technologies for industry, create green jobs and strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s role under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
