Andhra Pradesh to host India’s first, World’s largest green ammonia project at Kakinada

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh is set to host India’s first and the world’s largest green ammonia project at Kakinada, with AM Green developing a 1.5 million tonnes per annum facility through the conversion of an existing ammonia-urea complex. The project, described as one of the country’s biggest industrial revival efforts, will see its first major equipment erection ceremony held on Saturday in the presence of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan, reports The Times of India.

The green ammonia complex is being developed as an integrated clean-energy system that will combine 7.5 GW of solar and wind capacity, 1,950 MW of electrolyser capacity and 2 GW of round-the-clock renewable power backed by pumped hydro storage. The associated facility at Pinnapuram is also a first-of-its-kind project in India. With a total investment of about $10 billion, the AM Green project ranks among the largest clean-energy investments undertaken in the country.

During the construction phase, the project is expected to generate up to 8,000 jobs, along with large-scale skilled employment during operations and in related sectors such as renewable energy, logistics, storage and port services.

Minister for ITE&C and HRD Nara Lokesh said the project marks a major milestone for India, as it positions the country to export green energy in the form of green ammonia to markets such as Germany, Singapore and Japan. He said AM Green has already signed long-term supply agreements with global players including Germany’s Uniper and is in discussions with major companies in Japan and Singapore, making this the first instance of green energy exports from India to Europe and advanced Asian markets.

According to Lokesh, green ammonia produced at Kakinada will be used worldwide as a clean shipping fuel, for power generation and as a pathway to green hydrogen, supporting global efforts to cut emissions. He said the project aligns with the Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, and strengthens Andhra Pradesh’s position as a leading hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia in India. He added that the state government is committed to providing policy support, infrastructure and fast-track approvals to attract projects of global scale.

The project will be commissioned in phases, with 0.5 million tonnes per annum planned by 2027, 1.0 million tonnes by 2028 and the full 1.5 million tonnes capacity by 2030. It will drive investment in large-scale solar and wind power, enable round-the-clock renewable energy through pumped hydro storage, and support the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia at the world’s largest complex of its kind. Port-based export infrastructure will also be developed to serve international markets.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project, which will redevelop the existing Nagarjuna Fertilisers plant into a green ammonia facility. The project aims to replace coal, oil and natural gas with renewable energy, resulting in zero carbon emissions.

The development is supported by global investors including Malaysia-based Petronas, Singapore’s GIC and UAE-based ADIA. In addition, AM Green is setting up a 2 GW electrolyser manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs 2,000 crore as part of its broader clean-energy plans.
