L&T bags major order for hydrocarbon onshore business from BPCL

Larsen & Toubro’s Hydrocarbon Onshore business (L&T Onshore) has secured a major contract from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), the company said on Tuesday.

Under L&T’s classification, contracts valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore are categorised as “major” orders.

According to the statement, the scope of work includes engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a Linear Low-Density Polyethylene/High-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE/HDPE) swing unit at BPCL’s Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh. The unit will comprise two trains, each with a capacity of 575 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA).

The project will be executed by L&T Onshore on a lump-sum turnkey basis and, once completed, will be the largest LLDPE/HDPE swing unit in India, setting a new benchmark in polyethylene production capacity, the company said.

The order is part of BPCL’s Bina Petrochemicals and Refinery Expansion Project, which aims to establish a petrochemical complex and increase the refinery’s capacity from 7.8 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to 11 MMTPA. The expansion aligns with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative by boosting domestic manufacturing and self-reliance in polymer production.

Commenting on the win, Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President of L&T, said the order would strengthen the company’s balance sheet and reinforce its credentials in the downstream hydrocarbon EPC segment.

ES Sathyanarayanan, Senior Vice President and IC Head of L&T Energy Hydrocarbon – Onshore and member of L&T’s executive committee, said the order reflects customer confidence in L&T Onshore’s execution capabilities. He added that the company is committed to delivering the project while maintaining high standards of health, safety, environment (HSE) and quality.

L&T Onshore is among India’s largest EPC players, providing lump-sum turnkey solutions across upstream, midstream and downstream hydrocarbon sectors. The company has executed projects including refinery expansions, petrochemical complexes, gas processing plants, fertiliser plants, LNG terminals and cross-country pipelines across multiple geographies.
